Leapfrog has the reputation of being a company that delivers amazing educational electronic kids toys for children of all ages. This Leapfrog LeapPad 2 review takes an in depth look to see if the LeapPad2 is as innovation, durable, learning and educational focused as you have come to expect from this award winning brand.
There are currently two different models LeapPad 2’s available. One is the LeapFrog LeapPad 2 and the other is called the LeapFrog LeapPad 2 Power. There are two differences that must be noted when reading through this review. The LeapPad 2 does NOT have the rechargeable battery pack included and only includes 5 apps. The LeapPad 2 Power includes both the rechargeable battery pack and includes 9 apps. Neither of these tablets has the peer to peer play. If you are looking for peer to peer play, I suggest you look at the LeapFrog Ultra Tablet.
Rating-Leapfrog LeapPad 2 Review
The LeapPad 2 earns a rating of 4.25 out of 5.
Kids from 3 to 9 years old get so engrossed in the games and creativity center that they are learning even when they think they’re only playing games. They can take pictures and videos, then use what they film to have lots more creative fun.
LeapPad 2 is a little more expensive than other similar devices for kids but the ‘extras’ cost less. The LeapPad 2 comes with five fun apps for kids to play, create and sing-along with in addition to a free download of any popular app you choose. When you combine all that, LeapPad 2 is a great deal right out of the box!
The LeapPad 2 Power includes 9 apps and is also a great deal and typically runs about $15.00 more than the LeapPad 2. .
The LeapPad 2 is rugged enough to handle being lugged around in a backpack. Its durable casing can withstand the thumps and bumps of daily life with a child, from bike to car, to skateboard. For an added bit of protection, gel skins and screen protectors are available.
Customer Service and Warranty
On the outside chance that it does get broken, the manufacturer offers a one year, full replacement warranty. You are limited however, to one full replacement during the life of the warranty. The website offers a lot of information on their warranty policies.
I had to call LeapFrog’s customer service number for clarification and only waited on hold for about five minutes and found all of the options easy to navigate through. LeapFrog had a message playing while I waited which offered a few solutions to common issues. If I had called regarding one of these problems, I most likely would not have had to continue waiting on hold.
The LeapPad 2 Power edition includes rechargeable batteries that will last for up to 9 hours of use. This provides hours of entertainment for your child throughout the day and can be fully charged overnight. Please note that the standard LeapPad 2 does not include rechargeable batteries.
Ease of Use
There is no need for parental blocks to prevent kids from seeing inappropriate content because the internet is only used while downloading from a computer, with Netflix not being an option. At this age, disturbing images can stay with them for a lifetime, so it’s much better to be safe than sorry.
The LeapPad 2 comes highly recommended by teachers because it improves skills in every area of study. Kids are able to access a library of over 800 apps and games that have been approved by educators.
It has earned several awards for its educational value, innovation, design, age-appropriateness and entertainment factor. They include:
- The Toy Industry Association’s People’s Choice Toy Of the Year
- The Toy Industry Association’s Educational Toy Of The Year
- Oppenheim Toy Portfolio’s Platinum Award
- National Parenting Publications’ Gold Winner
- Learning Magazine’s Teacher’s Choice Award
- The Toy Insider’s Hot Winner
Eventually, of course, the kids outgrow the LeapPad 2 but most 9 year olds are very much interested in all it has to offer. Its ability to entertain even extends to some kids much older than 9, partly due to the front and back cameras and video recorder.
Memory and Storage
The LeapPad 2 has a memory and storage capacity of 4GB, which is 2 more GBs than the previous model. With this much memory there is really no need for the capability to expand the memory with an SDcard.
Power, Speed, and Screen Quality
The screen of the LeapPad 2 is bright and the processor is fast, both very desirable traits in a tablet. It has a very sleek, attractive look to it and comes in pink, blue and green, as well as some Disney character motifs. There is also a custom edition that comes with ten sticker skins and matching digital wallpaper.
Aesthetics and Customization
There are tons of different great LeapPad 2 bundles and skins available which makes this kids tablet one of the most customizable on the market.
From Disney Princesses, Monster’s University, and Barbie just to name a few, your child can really feel like their tablet is truly unique.
Be careful when looking at some of the different bundles as they do not all include the rechargeable batteries and that addition will save you a lot of money in the long run.
