LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra XDi

The LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra Xdi and the LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra had me completely confused, even though I was touching them, holding them and have learned every possible thing I can about them. They just seemed like the same tablet, but yet I couldn’t figure out the differences. I hope this explanation from what I learned today can keep you from being as confused as I have been.

Are you on the mad hunt to find the most absolutely perfect learning and educational tablet for you child? Are you finding all of the information more confusing than you had bargained for? I’m hoping that we can make this process much easier for you.

UPDATE: After careful consideration, we have recently named the LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra XDi as one of the top kids tablets. Check out this post to see which other tablets we have chosen as the best tablets for kids by age.

LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra vs LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra XDi

The LeapPad Ultra has been out since last year and has been awarded the 2014 Toy of the Year Award. This tablet in itself is an awesome tablet, but just to out do themselves, LeapFrog is releasing, just this fall, the LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra XDi. Is one tablet better than the other? What are the differences?

Different-But the Same

Both the LeapPad Ultra and the LeapPad XDi Ultra are for children ages 4-9. They have 2MP back and front cameras with video options, the same great 7 inch screen that has a clear resolution of 1024×600 with a whopping 8GB of on board memory.

They both come with 11 apps and a 12 month warranty, have the wifi capabilities and a built in lithium ion rechargeable battery.  Did I mention these tablets both have MP3 players and access to LeapSeach powered by Zui?

So, what is the difference? Even with touching them, looking at them and reading about them, I couldn’t find the difference either. So, I decided to call LeapFrog to find out exactly what is this new Ultra Xdi tablet all about.

This is what I found out. The new LeapFrog LeapPad XDi Ultra is just a little faster and they did a little tweaking to the battery which will allow for another hour or two of overall battery life before it needs to be recharged. The pricing seems to be the same and I checked all of the authorized retailers to see if there were any price differences and I wasn’t able to find any between the two tablets.

Update 11/17/14: I was instructed to call again later in the season as LeapFrog informed me that they would be updating the LeapPad Ultra to have the same speed and battery power as the Ultra XDi.

Customer service has informed me that these tablets now have the EXACT same features.

LeapPad Ultra XDI Deal
So, I believe it is safe to say that these two tablets are pretty much the same with just a few minor improvements of speed and an extra hour or two of battery life.

Please look at the LeapFrog Ultra tablet review for further explanation on the LeapFrog Ultra and essentially the LeapFrog LeapPad Ultra XDi’s education and learning options.

  1. Thank you for this!!! I ordered the Ultra from Target and thought it was the XDI model (since I assumed the old one was gone) but it came and boom, it’s the Ultra. Sitting here deciding if I should return it or not but couldn’t figure out the difference. So now I get to decide if it’s worth the $20 I saved for it to be ‘slightly faster and slightly more battery life.’ HMMM.

    • Hello Anna, I was like you and thoroughly confused about the differences and similarities of the Ultra and the XDI. Even after a few calls to LeapFrog, I still find it confusing that they have two very similar tablets. Good luck with your decision. Let us know which one you choose!

      • Actually I went in today and traded the Ultra in for the Ultra XDI because it’s the same price. Target has them on sale right now for $20 off but if you order off the website, they send you the Ultra instead of the Ultra XDI. It looks lighter too, skinnier, after comparing the two. The case is slightly different colors. I just know with electronics that newer is normally better. Both have the same specs but according to Leapfrog XDI is slightly faster. I would say if you already have the Ultra, it’s not worth upgrading.
